How to Bet on Sports
Betting on sports is actually a fairly simple concept. There are odds makers that set the “odds or lines” for each game. Spread Betting – This type of sports bet is the most common in all of sports. A spread is basically the number of points a team is favored to win the game by. Nearly all sports accept spread bets. One notable sport that does not is baseball.
Moneyline Betting – Betting on the Moneyline is very simple. There will be odds set on both teams. These odds are on that team winning the game straight up. You can bet on the underdog or the favorite to win these games.
Total Betting – This form of betting is also known as “over under betting”. A number is set by the odds makers for what they expect the final score to be. This includes both teams’ final scores. You can then bet on whether you think the score will go over or under this point total.
Future Betting – A future bet is a bet that you place on an event happening in the future. These bets will be outstanding until the event finally occurs.
Props Betting - Some events and games offer prop bets. A prop bet is a random type of bet on some situation occurring within that game. For instance, the player to score the first point would be a prop bet in sports.
Another very important thing to know before you begin sports betting is how to read the lines. Sports odds appear in three different formats: US Standard Odds, Decimal Odds and Fractional Odds. Which format you see depends on what site you are betting at and what you set as your preference in your player account.
US Standard Odds – This is the typical format for displaying odds for US sports bettors. A standard line in this format would read –110 (favorite) or +110 (underdog).
Decimal Odds – The decimal format is another common way for sports odds to be displayed. All you need to remember here is that the base number of 2.00 represents an even money bet. A favorite would be listed below this number such as 1.50 and the underdog would be over this number, like 2.50. If you multiply your bet amount times the “decimal factor” it will easily tell you how much you should win from that bet.
Fractional Odds – This is the standard for most UK sports bettors. An even money bet typically looks like 1/1 for fractional odds. The favorite would be listed as 1/3 and an underdog at 3/1.

The second question that comes up often is where to bet on sports. Probably the most common avenue to bet on sports these days is online. Online sportsbooks are popping up all over the place offering action for players. A second place that takes sports bets is your local bookie. While this may be very hard to find, they are still out there. Betting through a bookie can prove to be a very stressful way to wager sometime because you physically owe someone money if you lose your sports bets. The last place you can bet on sports would be Las Vegas or some other local casinos where sports betting is widespread. Sportsbooks in these cities are available and take bets 24 hours a day. They also show most of the games on their many TV screens to entice more betting action and feature comfortable lounges where you can have a few drinks while betting.
